Learn About Social Media in Gulf

Social media is an important subject in marketing today. Everyone talks about it. Government entities, big organizations, SMEs and people who want to promote themselves want to utilize it. The biggest business publishing magazines are talking about it is as Harvard Business Review writes about Social Media and marketing portals do write about it. I want to share my experience about social media in the Gulf.

Hi Fm Muscat is using it in a very nice way which is called “On Demand” where listeners can post what they do want to listen. I really like it. 5,161 are liking this page. Hi FM Muscat use their radio channel and inform people to use Facebook to publish the song they like it.

In Oman the Ministry of Tourism is using the social media too. They are posting from time to time information about places to visit, events and tips for tourists in the country. Ministry of Tourism in Oman use it to Market themselves.  They do not use words only. They do use pictures and movies. Through my experience to make a social media successful you need to use the pictures and movies to make your page more attractive. They are using Mulitmedia and that’s very effective way. In Oman we do have a popular Orchestra called, “Royal Oman Symphony Orchestra” which has developed a page for them.

His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum is using facebook too in very creative way and his page is updated from time to time regularly. Sometimes the updates reach 5 updates per day. 529,604 likes his page. It provides pictures of Sheikh Mohammed. Updating a facebook page is an important factor to make social media interesting.

Qatar Supreme Committee used the social media to try win the world cup in it’s country. It reached 590,390. This is a big number of users who select this page as like it. Teenagers, mid age people do use the social media a lot in the gulf. Some of the people do use the mobile feature of facebook every day, every hour and every minute. They would like to update their status and follow-up their like page whenever they are.

In the gulf some of the entities prefer to post the updates in social media in Arabic some in Enlgihsh. Etisalat do post in both languages. For most of the posts they do it in both languages.  Royal Oman Symphony Orchestra posts in the English language their posts. It differs from entity to another. It depends who are the readers and your targeted segment.

The education industry is using it too. Sultan Qaboos University and specifically College of Commerce and Economics (CCE) have a popular page that students do post different walls that I really like it.
In UAE Etisalat could reach  93,317 who like the page and in Qatar Qtel reached  155,398 who like the page. Qtel do use it in a nice way. They do post their advertisements, promotions and the new services. They do collect information about what customers like.

The newspapers are using it too khaleejtimes and GulfNews two English newspapers in UAE are publishing articles, videos and pictures.

Business use it to market their business.
